Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is an eye disorder caused by abnormal blood vessel growth in the light-sensitive region of the eyes of premature infants (retina). This is essentially a blinding eye condition that, if not detected early on, can result in irreversible blindness.

The majority of ROP cases are mild and resolve on their own. Only a small number of babies develop severe ROP, and treatment is usually successful. Dr. Swati Sinkar is in charge of screening premature babies for the eye condition retinopathy of prematurity in South Australia's northern suburbs.
