The race for nuclear fusion continues. South Korea has announced that it has broken a new record. The KStar reactor (for Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research) managed to maintain a plasma at 100 million degrees (Celsius) for 20 seconds.
The test was carried out on November 24 by Korea Institute of Fusion Energy (KFE). The KStar research center exceeds its counterparts, none of them having so far succeeded in maintaining a stable plasma at more than 100 million degrees for more than 10 seconds.
Now KStar must continue its efforts. 110 new experiments are planned, some intended to attenuate plasma disturbances, others to focus on its use. The institute plans to share key findings from its research with researchers around the world.
